Breastfeeding Welcome Here Scheme

The 'Breastfeeding welcome here scheme' tries to make it easier for mums to recognise the places where they can breastfeed their baby in a welcoming and comfortable environment when they are out and about.

Being part of the scheme could boost your business as well as benefitting the local community.

By encouraging breastfeeing you will be helping to protect the health of mothers and babies in your local community. By making life easier for mums, you will be showing that your business cares about its customers and may encourage them to come back in the future.

Breastfeeding is very important to the health of both mother and baby. Mothers who breastfeed are at a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Breastfed babies are less likely to suffer from infections and allergies and are also less likely to develop childhood diabetes and obesity.

While over a half of all new mums in Bradford start breastfeeding, many quickly stop. This is often because they feel there is a lack of support, particularly when they want to feed their baby away from home.

Breastfeeding should be a part of everyday life. It can be done discreetly without anyone even noticing the baby is being fed.

Any business that is open to the general public is welcome to join, whether it be a coffee shop, supermarket or clothes shop.  Your business must however fullfill the following criteria to be able to join.
  • Breastfeeding is welcome in all areas open to the general public.
  • A mother who is breastfeeding will not be asked to stop or move to another area to feed.
  • All members of staff are made aware that your business is a member of the scheme and therefore supportive of the needs of breastfeeding mums.
  • The public are made aware that you are a member of the scheme and support breastfeeding through the display of the scheme's window sticker and certificate on your business premises.
